Methyl tert-butyl ether is made from blending chemicals such as isobutylene and methanol. It is an additive to increase the octane levels in gasoline. In developed countries, these materials are forbidden. But in Asian countries the use of MTBE is rising.

 

Features of Methyl tert-butyl ether:

Methyl tert-butyl ether appears as a colorless liquid which is flammable and has a spicy smell. Methyl tert-butyl ether is able to be dissolve in the water which contribute to causing a nasty smell. Methyl tert-butyl ether is unstable against strong acids. It can be dangerous when blend with Bromine.

 

Application of Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE):

As it been mentioned, as a result of adding these materials to the gasoline, the octan level will be increased. MTBE solvent can be used as a replacement of diethyl ether. It is also used in the pharmaceutical industry to dissolve gallstones.
