How to make polystyrene:

The most common polystyrene is made from formaldehyde, also known as polyoxymethylene. Formaldehyde is polymerized with anionic initiators such as triphenylphosphine.

This polymer was first commercially produced by DuPont in 1956 and marketed as Del Rin. Due to its properties, this material can replace non-ferrous metals in some cases.
Polystyrene has a high crystallinity and their crystallinity is between 77 and 80%. Most polystyrene resins have various additives and may also add 20 to 30% glass fibers to improve creep strength and stiffness./ Source
